Wastewater Lagoon Turnover: What to Expect

You may notice a brief increase in odour coming from wastewater lagoons during certain weather
conditions. This is caused by something called thermal turnover.
Here's what's happening in simple terms:
In winter months, lagoon water layers separate-ice and cold water sit on top while warmer water stays
below. When temperatures shift (warmer days & nights, wind, or seasonal change), those layers mix.
This mixing brings naturally occurring gases from the bottom of the lagoon that have been trapped all
winter up to the surface all at once, which can create a short-term increase in odour.
The good news:
- It's temporary
- It's a natural process
- It doesn't mean something is wrong with the system
Odour levels usually settle back down once the lagoon stabilizes again.
Thanks for your understanding as nature does its thing
